Step 4 — Assemble the dossier

To fulfill the legal adoption requirements overseas, you will need to assemble a variety of documents which are collectively refered to as a dossier. Each country has its own requirements as to what documents are needed, and in what format they need to appear. The dossier may contain any of the following:

  • Birth certificate for you and your spouse
  • Marriage license/certificate, if applicable
  • Divorce decree, if applicable
  • Police clearance/criminal background check report for each parent
  • Medical report for each parent
  • Employment and income verification
  • Financial statements
  • BCIS approval
  • Home study report
  • Reference letters
  • Photos of family and home

Once the notarized documents are collected, they may also need to be certified by the U.S. State Department and/or authenticated by the appropriate embassy or consulate in the country where you plan to adopt. AMI will help with every step — we'll make sure the correct documents are collected, translate the documents from English, and forward the completed dossier to the appropriate overseas administrative offices for further processing.
