Adoption process

To complete an international adoption and bring a child back home to the United States, parents must meet all of the requirements set forth by 1) the US Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS), 2) the foreign country from which the child will be adopted, and 3) the state in which the parents reside.

The entire process can seem overwhelming to parents when they first start looking into the prospect of adopting internationally. Where do you begin? How do you find a child? How do you make sure all of the critical paperwork is completed on time? What about language barriers?

The following pages should help to give you a general understanding of the six basic steps involved in an international adoption. Specific program requirements vary of course by country, and the entire process can take anywhere from 4 to 13 months.
